King<\/p>\n<p>Birthplace: New Hampshire<\/p>\n<p>Occupation: Lawyer<\/p>\n<p>Yearly Salary as President: $25,000<\/p>\n<p>Height: 5&#8217;10&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>First Lady: Jane Appleton Pierce<\/p>\n<p>Franklin Pierce became the Democratic candidate for president simply to break a deadlock over who would be nominated. He was views as an acceptable candidate because he had never mentioned his views on slavery and because served in the Mexican-American War and could be portrayed as a war hero. His third son, Benjamin, died in a train accident on the way to his father&#8217;s inauguration. Benjamin&#8217;s death threw Franklin and his wife into deep depression, tainting Pierce&#8217;s presidential performance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/columnists\/jacquielynn-floyd\/20120824-toughest-job-in-american-politics-first-lady.ece\">Image Credit<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a><img decoding=\"async\" alt=' \"Bleeding Kansas\" Image credit: http:\/\/www.civilwaracademy.com\/bleeding-kansas.html' src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/0b35ed4decbbc5ad3ed7a67609b50acc.jpg\" style=\"max-height: 500px; width: auto;\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p> &#8220;Bleeding Kansas&#8221; Image credit: http:\/\/www.civilwaracademy.com\/bleeding-kansas.html<\/p>\n<p>Pierce insisted that Congress pass the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which allowed the setters in those two territories to decide on the legality of slavery in their states. This led to &#8220;Bleeding Kansas,&#8221; with fighting breaking out between settlers who did and did not support slavery. This led directly to the creation of the Republican party. Pierce received so many threats, that he became the first president to hire a full-time bodyguard.<\/p>\n<p><a><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"president-franklin-pierce\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/014e2c56e5a574209545ec8c59d08c72.jpg\" style=\"max-height: 500px; width: auto;\"\/><\/a><a><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ostend Manifesto\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/abdaafef6940046106acbcc40703cf9b.jpg\" style=\"max-height: 500px; width: auto;\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ostend Manifesto<\/p>\n<p>In the Ostend Manifesto, Pierce&#8217;s Secretary of State justified why the US should purchase Cuba from Spain, or take it by force if their offer was not accepted. Northerners viewed this as an attempt to annex additional slave-holding territories. Ultimately, Pierce was unsuccessful in acquiring Cuba from Spain.<\/p>\n<p><a><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Gadsden Purchase\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/88167b2ec5ad8ee2888af081a1810f32.jpg\" style=\"max-height: 500px; width: auto;\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gadsden Purchase<\/p>\n<p>Pierce&#8217;s successes during his presidency include the Gadsden Purchase, which added parts of Arizona and New Mexico to the US.
