Tilden, actually won the popular vote, Rutherford B. Hayes was named President, winning the presidency by 20 disputed electoral vote.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/ad3164ac51541d430de297dd471cb2bf.jpg\" style=\"max-height: 500px; width: auto;\"\/>Source<\/p>\n<p>Rutherford, a Puritan, held strong moral standards and attempted to run the country by the same standards and beliefs. He fought for racial equality and attempted to outlaw using the spoils system for the appointment of federal positions. Chester A. Arthur, who would eventually become America&#8217;s 21st President, refused to abide by the merit system for federal appointees and was removed from his office as Collector of the Port of New York on account of it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/usercontent1.hubstatic.com\/11826916.jpg\" style=\"max-height: 500px; width: auto;\"\/><\/p>\n<p>One of the first issues Rutherford dealt with in his presidency was the Great Railroad Strike of 1877, which spread from state to state after wages were cut and workers refused to work on the railroads. Garfield.
