It’s a great book to read because children can read why Andrew Jackson would be celebrated in New Orleans. They’ll also recognize references to Jean Laffite at the Cabildo.

Celebrating Louisiana: 50 States to Celebrate (Green Light Readers Level 3) by Jane Kurtz includes a teacher and his students exploring Louisiana, with much of it based in New Orleans. It includes a Mardi Gras parade, jazz music, a swap, and more.

Gaston Goes to Mardi Gras by James Rice is part of a cute series about Gaston the Alligator who travels the state of Louisiana. This was our favorite one from the series. He visits a Mardi Gras parade (a family-friendly one). It does a wonderful job of including many Mardi Gras traditions.

The Runaway Beignet by Connie Morgan is a New Orleans-style version of “The Gingerbread Boy” and features a beignet running through the main sites of the French Quarter.

P is for Pelican: A Louisiana Alphabet by Anita C. Prieto covers the entire state but spends quite a bit on what is unique to New Orleans, such as beignets. It has short verses about each item (for if you’re reading to younger children) and then includes a few paragraphs of explanation (for reading to older elementary children). The illustrations are well-done and engaging as well.

Explore the New Orleans Museum of Art

Mardi Gras in New Orleans is a family tradition

New Orleans Architecture 101

Activities for Kids in New Orleans

New Orleans in a Day | Things to Do in 24 Hours

Looking for More Travel Tips to Other Destinations?

Washington, D.C. on a Budget with Kids

Houston, Texas: Want to spend one fun-filled day in Houston, visiting some of the nation’s best museums and gardens all for FREE (including parking)?
