We held a festive feast complete with entertainment and much merriment. Also included are the field trips we took during our unit. Read &amp; discuss Psalm 36:7-9.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>2. Read &#8220;Medieval Feast&#8221; by Aliki.<\/p>\n<p><strong>YOU WILL NEED:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0690042469\/?tag=hubacct7155-20\">&#8220;A Medieval Feast&#8221; by Aliki<\/a><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Have children set up &amp; decorate the &#8220;banquet hall.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Use 3 tables to make a U shape. Place the chairs on the outside of the U.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Cover the tables with white tablecloths.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Place cut greenery from a tree or bush on the tables.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>If you have them, place flameless\/electric candles on the tables.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Use tape or hang up on the walls the &#8220;tapestries&#8221; the children made during the lesson on Medieval Art.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Place 1-2 medium-sized mixing bowls on each table and place a dish that is larger than the bowl under the bowl. Fill the bowls with water. Place flower petals and\/or fresh herbs in the water. Place a kitchen towel or a cloth napkin next to each water bowl. These will be used as &#8220;aquamaniles&#8221; to wash hands during the meal.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Place a pita bread round at each place setting. These will be the &#8220;trenchers&#8221; that will be used as plates.<\/li>\n<p><\/ul>\n<p><strong>YOU WILL NEED:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 tablecloth per table (preferably a white tablecloth), cut greenery from trees or bushes, the &#8220;tapestries&#8221; the children made during the lesson on Medieval Art, tape, 1-2 medium-sized mixing bowls per table, 1 large plate to go under each bowl, 1 kitchen towel or cloth napkin per bowl, flower petals and\/or fresh herbs, flameless\/electric candles (optional) , &amp; 1 pita bread round per child (and adult if they are eating)<\/li>\n<p><\/ul>\n<h2>Prepare the food for the feast<\/h2>\n<p><a><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"medieval-feast-lesson-plan\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/6402d18489e86d74c67e973d4eaf7fe6.jpg\" style=\"max-height: 500px; width: auto;\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Lead the children in preparing the food for the feast by following the recipes below, which are from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.konos.com\/www\/index.html\">KONOS Volume I Curriculum<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Wassail<\/h2>\n<p><a><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Talking about spices &amp; the spices used in wassail\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/ce80a809be67b4e33d5f62b739c2c5d9.jpg\" style=\"max-height: 500px; width: auto;\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Talking about spices &amp; the spices used in wassail<\/p>\n<p><a><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Preparing wassail\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/b9136d16f717694fd358f47fa332e69a.jpg\" style=\"max-height: 500px; width: auto;\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Preparing wassail<\/p>\n<ol type=\"a\">\n<li>Prepare <strong>Wassail:<\/strong> Quickly discuss about spices during the Medieval Ages. Allow the children to smell them. Then let the children prepare wassail.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>1 bottle (64 oz.) of apple juice or apple cider<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>1\/4 t. nutmeg<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>1\/2 t. ginger<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>1-7 sticks cinnamon<\/li>\n<p><\/ul>\n<p>Pour or place everything into a pot. Bring it to a boil, cover, and simmer.<\/p>\n<p>(While the children work on cucumbers, a teacher\/parent should pour wassail into cups.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>YOU WILL NEED:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 bottle (64 oz.) of apple juice or apple cider, 1\/4 t. nutmeg, 1\/2 t. ginger , 1-7 sticks of cinnamon, 1 Styrofoam cup per person, &amp; a pot for simmering wassail<\/li>\n<p><\/ul>\n<h2>Apricot Pasta<\/h2>\n<p><a><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Apricot Pasta\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/50a1416a9d1b152d9414a52f7268e165.jpg\" style=\"max-height: 500px; width: auto;\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Apricot Pasta<\/p>\n<ol type=\"a\">\n<li>Apricot Pasta:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>8 oz. spaghetti broken into small pieces<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>1 Tbsp. salt<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>1\/2 Tbs. oil<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>1 c. dried, diced apricots<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>1\/2 c. orange juice<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>8 T. (1 stick) butter<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>2 Tbsp. honey<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>3\/4 t. cinnamon<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>1 t. ground almonds<\/li>\n<p><\/ul>\n<p>Directions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Teacher\/Parent: Ahead of time, bring water to a boil. Add the salt, oil, &amp; pasta. Boil 8 minutes or until done. Drain.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Meanwhile, in a separate pan allow children to add the apricots, orange juice, honey, butter, cinnamon and almonds. Heat together for 5 minutes or until butter melts.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Allow a child to pour the apricot butter over pasta.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Place pasta on a platter.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Decorate with fresh herbs if desired.<\/li>\n<p><\/ol>\n<p><strong>YOU WILL NEED: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 platter, 1 t. ground almonds, 1 stick of butter, 1 Tbsp. salt, 2 Tbsp. dried or fresh basil, Italian seasoning, or parsley, 8 oz. spaghetti, 1\/2 Tbs. oil, 1 c. dried, diced apricots, 1\/2 c. orange juice, 2 Tbsp. honey, pot for boiling spaghetti, colander, skillet, measuring spoons<\/li>\n<p><\/ul>\n<h2>Sliced Cucumbers<\/h2>\n<p><a><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"medieval-feast-lesson-plan\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/918277a8d117189f938ae81d2c40458c.jpg\" style=\"max-height: 500px; width: auto;\"\/><\/a><a><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"medieval-feast-lesson-plan\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/71edf8260c110487f941a1d10ff4f8ce.jpg\" style=\"max-height: 500px; width: auto;\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<ol type=\"a\">\n<li>Sliced Cucumbers:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Quickly discuss knife safety. Hold the item securely from the top. Never have your fingers under the blade. <\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Allow children to slice 2 cucumbers. (If children are very young, you can partially slice the cucumber and then let them finish cutting each slice.)<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Combine 2 t. sugar and 1 t. cinnamon. Just tell the children it is a frog leg pie but do not let them touch it. In order to make it, fill a pie plate with candy. Place a baked pie crust on top. Order of Events for the Medieval Feast:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Trumpet Entry: Have someone play a toy trumpet and announce each child as they enter. <strong>YOU WILL NEED: <\/strong>a toy trumpet<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>The herald will announce, &#8220;All stand please for their royal highnesses.&#8221; The King &amp; Queen of the ceremony will enter.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Welcome: The king or queen will welcome everyone, saying something like, &#8220;Welcome one and all. May God richly bless this sacred occasion with both merriment &amp; peace. You may be seated.&#8221;<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Toasts: A child can make a toast saying something like, &#8220;Let the festivities begin. It&#8217;s time to raise your glass of Wassail, but take heed not to drink until our toasts have been complete&#8221; and then, &#8220;A toast to your health. May success, prosperity, and the blessings of our Heavenly Father be with you all! Wassail! (Everyone repeats) Once more, please! Wassail! (Everyone repeats)&#8221;<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Feast &amp; Entertainment: Intersperse courses with entertainment.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Each family is in charge of entertaining the group during one of the courses. Ideas include a &#8220;minstrel&#8221; playing a toy instrument, &#8220;acrobats&#8221; doing tumbling, &#8220;minstrel&#8221; singing, showing off sword fighting skills, dancing, &#8220;bard&#8221; telling the story of Robin Hood, &#8220;jester&#8221; trying to juggle or tell a joke, a master showing off the skills of his trained dancing &#8220;bears&#8221; (teddy bears), etc.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Trumpet to signal end of feast.
