As soon as Fillmore took office, Taylor&#8217;s cabinet resigned and Fillmore replaced them with men who supported the Compromise of 1850. Stephen Douglas added additional bills that Fillmore passed into law related to slavery in the territories and fugitive slaves.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/6fcb3cd4d0341041df374496192ce8c9.jpg\" style=\"max-height: 500px; width: auto;\"\/>Source<\/p>\n<p>Fillmore took an interest in the Pacific. He ordered Commodore Perry to open Japan to western trade. He also supported Hawaii&#8217;s independence and discouraged Napoleon III from attempting to annex Hawaii.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/1d8cbea0d9e9c8724effc009d0301eae.jpg\" style=\"max-height: 500px; width: auto;\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Fillmore installing the first bathtub with running water in the White House was actually a myth. It was a joke written by H. L. Mencken in 1917 in the New York Evening Mail. In honor of the bathtub hoax, Moravia, New York, a town near Fillmore&#8217;s hometown, holds an annual event, Fillmore Days, during which participants race four-wheel bathtubs.
