Children&#8217;s book suggestions and video clips are included.<\/p>\n<h2>Chinese New Year Read Aloud Books<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Read <em>PoPo&#8217;s Lucky Chinese New Year<\/em> by Virginia Loh-Hagan and <em>The Nian Monster<\/em> by Andrea Wang. There are so many things we loved about <em>The Nian Monster. <\/em>which is about a young girl who outwits the Nian monster who returns to eat up all the people in Shanghai during Chinese New Year. Not only does the book teach about many aspects of Chinese New Year (legend of Nian, dumplings, fireworks, etc.), it also includes some of the main sites of Shanghai. My children laughed out loud multiple times and immediately wanted to know if the author had written any other books so we could read those as well.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>YOU WILL NEED: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1585369780\/?tag=hubacct7155-20\"><em>PoPo&#8217;s Lucky Chinese New Year<\/em> by Virginia Loh-Hagan<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0807556459\/?tag=hubacct7155-20\"><em>The Nian Monster<\/em> by Andrea Wang<\/a> or other books on Chinese New Year<\/li>\n<p><\/ul>\n<h2>Learning About the Chinese New Year<\/h2>\n<p><a><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Shoppers during the Chinese New Year holidays\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/4f477b6f491282a1fbe9bfe17f40126c.jpg\" style=\"max-height: 500px; width: auto;\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Shoppers during the Chinese New Year holidays<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Briefly discuss Chinese New Year, also called the Spring Festival or the Lunar New Year, is one of the most important holidays in China.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>This 15 day holiday begins on the new moon that appears between January 21 and February 20.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>It is a time for Chinese families to gather and to honor ancestors. Traditions include cleaning the house before the New Year (to sweep out bad luck), decorating with red paper-cutouts, giving money in red envelopes, and lighting firecrackers.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Watch the below videos on Chinese New Year.<\/li>\n<p><\/ul>\n<h2>Preparing for Chinese New Year<\/h2>\n<p><a><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Filling red envelopes with new dollar bills\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/70f95d27291ed26c0994530fc17ddced.jpg\" style=\"max-height: 500px; width: auto;\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Filling red envelopes with new dollar bills<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Prepare for Chinese New Year:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Clean some or all of your house as part of the preparations for Chinese New Year. You will need to do this ahead of time as you are supposed to do it BEFORE Chinese New Year. Traditionally, if you clean during Chinese New Year, you might sweep up your &#8220;good luck.&#8221;<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Read this article on how to celebrate Chinese New Year: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikihow.com\/Celebrate-Chinese-New-Year\">https:\/\/www.wikihow.com\/Celebrate-Chinese-New-Year<\/a><\/li>\n<p><\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>Add dollar bills, preferably newer bills, to red envelopes. You can purchase ones like we did or make your own. How much money you add depends on you. &#8220;Lucky&#8221; numbers include 8, 2, and 6. The &#8220;unluckiest&#8221; number is 4, so do not include only $4. (The word for &#8220;four&#8221; in Chinese sounds similar to the word for &#8220;death.&#8221;)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>YOU WILL NEED:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Red envelopes with dollar bills inside &#8211; You can make your own envelopes or buy them (We bought ours as a set with decorations from AmazingValueDeal on amazon.)<\/li>\n<p><\/ul>\n<h2>Tray of Togetherness<\/h2>\n<p><a><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Our Tray of Togetherness\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/121e512faf402f52f15edb2688491adf.jpg\" style=\"max-height: 500px; width: auto;\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our Tray of Togetherness<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Set out circular bowls of 8 treats as a simplified tray of togetherness to snack on while decorating. The number 8 is considered to be the luckiest number in China since, in Chinese, it sounds similar to the word for prosperity. (This idea came from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.malaysianchinesekitchen.com\/chinese-new-year-candy-box-tray-of-togetherness\/\">malaysianchinesekitchen.com<\/a> .) We set out:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Sweetened Coconut Flakes (Ye zi &#8211; for Togetherness &amp; Family Unity)<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Roasted Peanuts (Fa Sang &#8211; for Good Health and Longevity)<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>&#8220;Candied Winter Melon&#8221; (we used gummy vitamins) (Thong Tung Kwa &#8211; for growth &amp; good health)<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Pistachios (Hoi Sum Guo &#8211; for Happiness)<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>&#8220;Melon Seeds&#8221; (we used pepitas or you could use sunflower seeds) (Kua Chee &#8211; for Fertility &amp; Many Offspring)<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Candied Ginger (Keong Thong &#8211; for Growth &amp; Good Health)<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Mandarins (We used canned mandarins because that&#8217;s what we had but fresh would have been better) (for Wealth &amp; Prosperity)<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Chocolate Gold Ingots (We used Rolos candies) (for Wealth &amp; Prosperity)<\/li>\n<p><\/ul>\n<p><strong>YOU WILL NEED:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the above foods or something similar<\/li>\n<p><\/ul>\n<h2>Decorations and Dress<\/h2>\n<p><a><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Decorating for Chinese New Year\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/dd413ddf4dbe6cc5d220211983bba98c.jpg\" style=\"max-height: 500px; width: auto;\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Decorating for Chinese New Year<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Decorate for Chinese New Year.
