Through World War II, Wichita was the aviation capital of the US. Learjet still builds their aircraft in Wichita.<\/p>\n

Climbing Kansas Mountains (Aladdin Picture Books) by George Shannon <\/p>\n

Climbing Kansas Mountains by George Shannon is a sweet book about a boy and his father as they enjoy the fields of wheat that surround them.<\/p>\n

Twister Twyla: The Kansas Cowgirl by Jerri Garretson is a cute tall tale about a cowgirl in Kansas who rides tornadoes across Kansas.<\/p>\n

Aunt Minnie and the Twister by Mary Skillings Prigger is about a determined and practical grandmother who watches after her small Kansas farm and 9 nieces and nephews. Find out what happens when their farm is home is turned around during a tornado.<\/p>\n

One Kansas Farmer: A Kansas Number Book (America by the Numbers) by Devin Scillian is similar to “S is for Sunflower: A Kansas Alphabet,” but it uses numbers rather than the alphabet as its theme when going through the famous people, places, and events of Kansas.<\/p>\n

Kansas’s Sights and Symbols (Kid’s Guide to Drawing America) by Jenny Deinard is part of a great series that combines state geography with art. Each page contains something about the state (a state artist, the state flag, bird, tree, capitol building, areas of interest, and animals.) A photograph will be included along with a brief explanation about that item. Then the page opposite of that includes step by step directions on how to draw that symbol or site. Even my 6 year old is able to follow the drawing directions, and I’ve been amazed at how well my 9 year old has been drawing each of the state flags as he follows the instructions in the book.<\/p>\n

Amelia Earhart and the Haunted Winds of Kansas (Ameritales) by T.D. Carter tells the story of Amelia Earhart’s childhood growing up in Kansas and includes some of the events that shaped her into the tradition-breaking aviator she became.<\/p>\n

Rabbit Goes to Kansas by Deborah L. Duvall is a clever story told in a traditional Cherokee manner about a rabbit from Oklahoma that travels to Kansas and meets a settlement of Jayhawks. They introduce him to the game of basketball, and he brings the sport back with him to Oklahoma.<\/p>\n

Billy’s Mountain by Steve Richardson is about a Kansas farmer boy who dreams of building a mountain on the flat plains of Kansas. Because of his determination and with the assistance of others, his dream comes true.<\/p>\n

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum (272 pages) starts and ends in Kansas. Even though most of the book takes place in the fictional land of Oz, many aspects of Kansas are included in the book such as tornados, farms and farmhands, scarecrows, and more. It is quite different from the wonderful classic movie and definitely worth reading!<\/p>\n

Steal Away Home (Aladdin Historical Fiction) by Lois Ruby (192 pages) is about a 12 year old girl who discovers a hidden room while redecorating her family’s home in Kansas. She discovers her home had belonged to an abolitionist who was part of the Underground Railroad. This is a wonderful way to introduce the state’s history of regarding Bleeding Kansas. <\/p>\n

Kansas Tall Tales by Jerri Garretson (102 pages) is a compilation of Kansas prairie legends and lore. This book also includes numerous black and white illustrations.<\/p>\n
